What a move!!!  Way to go Zondervan!  See the apology on Soong Chan Rah’s blog.  (If you don’t know about this controversy, read this.)

I have a hard time with many approaches to women’s ministries I’ve come across over the years.  It seems that they are often rooted in tea parties, knitting, and garden clubs.  Those things are fine and all, just not particularly my ‘cup of tea’ (no pun intended).  Here are a few perspectives on ways women [...]

Zondervan has just released a book called “Deadly Viper Character Assassins: A Kung Fu Survival Guide for Life and Leadership” that left me nearly speechless, in a bad way.  The racism and stereotyping is so palpable I am embarrassed that it is even associated with Christianity (though sadly, not surprised).  Check out more info here, [...]

I just saw this on Amazon (published in 2008) and was surprised I haven’t seen it before.  “In love but worlds apart” by Greta Shelling – looks interesting, and the author is certainly well qualified to write the book!  She’s also written a workbook for intercultural couples called ‘Love across Latitudes“.

I’m a shameless fan of Intervarsity Press and have been known to buy their books based on their the publisher alone.  They publish some of the best Christian cross-cultural literature, and have some new titles coming out this Winter.  I just got their new catalog and can’t help but share the ones that look most [...]

I’m currently reading “Teach like your hair’s on fire: the methods and madness inside room 56” by Rafe Esquith.  Rafe teaches in inner city LA and has students who have made significant gains.  He has the students read literary classics and perform Shakespeare.  Rafe has received many awards and recognitions for his work.  Here’s an [...]

Deep down, my absolute favorite thing to do is shop. As I write this, I’m internally scheming how to get the biggest bang for my buck on my next errand. I like things, especially pretty ones, and acquiring them makes me feel good. As I’ve come to recognize this passion of mine, [...]

I have frequently shied away from the topic of Israel for a variety of reasons.
1) Its highly controversial among Christians, particularly in the US
2) I’m embarrassed by The Left Behind books
3) I’m not a theologian or eschatologist and the issues seem highly complex
However, as I continue to ponder the implications of the unquestioned support of [...]

Linda Leigh Hargrave posted about an interesting little book titled “And don’t call me a racist!” on her blog 17 Seeds.  This free resource is a collection of quotes from many perspectives on race in America.
Also on race is an article I wrote awhile back, What I do wrong with Race: Confessions from a White [...]

In spite of the popularity of the term “simplicity”, it seems that not much is simple these days. “Real Simple” magazine gives guidance on decorating your table for a five course meal or coordinating your living room curtains with your TV remote control. Stores sell wall plaques declaring “Simplicity” for [...]

Guide to prayer addressing global issues of gender-based injustice.  I just started this this morning, and it is powerful and very difficult to read…  It goes through issues such as abortion, child prositution, domestic violence, eating disorders, female laborers, incest, and pornagraphy.  (Like I said, difficult to read!)

I just started this study on Habakuk by my favorite author, Jan Johnson.  It’s about how Habakuk dealt with all the injustice and wickedness he saw.  Jan Johnson draws some great parallels regarding how to live in a world full of violence, injustice, and chaos.  It’s a free download!
From the intro:
“What’s this world coming to?” [...]

Read children’s books online at ICDL.  This site allows you to search for books by country and includes books from many cultures.  I even found about 10 books that you can read online from SRI LANKA!!! (This NEVER happens outside of Sri Lanka itself…)  Definitely a must-visit for those with children…

(In addition to cross-cultural relationships, another side interest of mine is spiritual formation. I wrote this for some other sites and thought I’d include it here.)

By Tricia McCary Rhodes, 2008. Intervarsity Press.
While I’m an enthusiastic fan of the spiritual formation movement, one of my hang-ups with it is the lack of space in my [...]
